Flat-lay of compressive activewear in soft neutral tones

How Compression Should Feel

Compression is the most misunderstood word in activewear. A calibration guide for how firm is firm enough.

The word compression covers everything from a soft hug to a medical-grade wrap. In activewear, the useful range is much narrower, and the difference between 'firm and supportive' and 'restrictive' is a surprisingly thin line.

Leggings

A sculpting legging should feel like steady, uniform pressure across the thigh and glute. You should be able to pinch no more than half a centimetre of fabric at the thigh; pinching more means the legging is under-compressed.

Signs of too much compression: visible banding above or below the waistband, numbness in the thigh after ten minutes, difficulty breathing when seated.

Sports bras

A low-impact bra should feel held from the band. The cup should sit flush without digging or gaping. If you can run two fingers under the band with only slight resistance, the compression is right.
